The creative forces, be they art, music, or performance, have always found fertile ground in Detroit. A new place for creativity has bloomed at Jefferson and Chalmers: a pop-up art space. An abandoned party store at Jefferson and Chalmers has been transformed into a new presence for art in Detroit. Jeremy Hansen, Director of River’s Edge Gallery, has been working in conjunction with Roger VanTol, head architect and project manager. They have also been coordinating with JEBA, the Jefferson East Business Association. What they have created is a beautiful new contemporary art space. With a limited budget and a lot of elbow grease, the once derelict party store was disassembled and torn out, its materials re-purposed to create walls, benches, and pedestals. Artists in the space include Patricia Izzo, Amy Chenier, Barbara Melnik Carson, Tim Burke, Bill Morrison, Jeremy E. Hansen, Audrey Pongracz, Niagara, Johnny Bee Bedanjek, and Buddy Morsello. Morsello created a permanent mural on the walls of the interior. This is the first time River’s Edge Gallery will have a formal place in Detroit. The permanent River’s Edge Gallery is located in Wyandotte, the pop-up in Detroit. The pop-up space will remain open every Friday and Saturday through July 6.
