Renown retro Artist and his Daughter Tell Stories of the Past with Paintings
River’s Edge Gallery is pleased to present “Telling Stories”, a new show By Kevin (AKA SLAW) Stanislawski. Joining him will be his daughter Taylor Stanislawski. Taylor shares a studio with her father and this has given her freedom to experiment with her own style although a viewer can see an influence in her style and choice of subject from painting with one of the most well known and collected artists out of Detroit. The show opens with a meet the artists reception on June 30th at 6:00 pm at River’s Edge Gallery in downtown Wyandotte and runs until August 4th.
Some of the pieces in this show may differ in theme and style for Kevin Stanislawski. He still seems to travel through time capturing the special moments of everyday life and then painting narrative works with humour, honesty and sensuality. “Telling Stories” presents all new works by Stanislawski and is an evolution from his graphic interpretations of vintage pop culture to gracefully detailed rendered vintage narratives. This includes a new series diving into prohibition times which has quite a Detroit history. This is also the first time that Stanislawski is using his full name, Kevin Stanislawski and not just his moniker “SLAW”. Kevin stated, “This is not a departure from my prior works but an evolution.”
Kevin (SLAW) Stanislawski graduated from the College For Creative Studies and held a studio at the Scarab Club for a number of years before moving to his latest Detroit studio. Stanislawski’s works are in local and international collections including The Roostertail and The Detroit Institute Of Arts. Stanislawski has worked on projects with director/actor/comedian Ted Raimi and many large scale commissioned works have popped up in eateries and businesses including his last mural for the Detroit Shipping company, a new restaurant and entertainment collective in Detroit. Stanislawski currently lives and works in Detroit Michigan and continues to be a main house artist at River’s Edge Gallery.
Taylor Stanislawski, the daughter of Kevin (SLAW) is a Detroit artist who is currently attending CCS. According to Taylor, “ My current work reflects a pop-art sort of fashion leaning to the female figure. I like for my characters to have intense eyes and bold expressions/ body language that draw the audience into their mood reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s. I hope I achieved that with my work in this series.”
Both artist’s works do tell historical narratives that can be conveyed or told through the paint brush.
“Telling Stories” opens June 30th 6pm -10pm. Light refreshments and hors d’hoeuvres will be served. The show runs june 30th – until August 4th. Subscribe to our social media or contact us at info@artattheedge.com to find out about special events with “Telling Stories”
