River's Edge Gallery is pleased to collaborate with artist / activist Brenda Oelbaum on another great interactive art installation. "It's always such a treat to watch Brenda transform a space with her poignant & enlightening installations. I am especially excited about this particular art happening since Mary has been a long time supporter of the gallery.  " says owner Patt Slack.

Mary is a non-diet Registered Dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, with a background in culinary arts and food systems and curating the hors d'oeuvres. She is also excited to collaborate with Brenda and will be available to talk to people about their relationship with food and help those who are curious about nutrition and food justice solutions.

Brenda is no stranger to "stirring the pot".  Classically trained in painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto Canada. Brenda Oelbaum is a feminist, multimedia, conceptual artist, working in whatever medium best translates the intended message.  Increasingly her work has become political and ecologically minded, repurposing objects found, donated or bought on the resale market objects in her artwork.  From diet books, to piggy banks and now unwanted seascape paintings, Oelbaum finds inspiration in hunting for the weird and unloved.  Buying antiques and collectibles and repurposing them is an ecologically sound practice.

ABOUT-

Nothing makes you feel more like a winner than looking like a loser? " During National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and the start of Women's History Month Artist and Fat Feminist Activist Brenda Oelbaum invites self identifying Women and Girls into her closet to try on her jeans.

"Judging My Worth By the Seat of My Pants" is an interactive installation inviting visitors to the gallery into the madness of the mind of a person with body image issues and the confusion brought on by the fashion industry's use of vanity sizing, and the diet industry's seductive use of the 'before&after' picture."

Become a Willendorf Model, have your 'after' picture taken in my 'big girl' pants without the need to diet. The photoshoot is part of the preliminary work of the Venus of Willendorf Project's upcoming No Diet 2023 Event.

Oelbaum is excited to collaborate with Nutritionist Mary Balog, as she brings her scientific and nutritional practice knowledge to the table to address taming the insanity and medicalized misinformation that trigger us and lead to the dysregulation and pathologizing of our natural eating habits.

Light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served. River's Edge is located in the centre of the open container social district.
